Data Info |
Assoc Prof Chia Tet Fatt of the National Institute of Education has inserted into the red-leaf lettuce the very gene from grapes that makes resveratrol. Since it is leafy, this lettuce makes many times more of the molecule than grapes do. Resveratrol has been proved to combat heart diseases. The genetically-modified red-leaf lettuce is the first food product to go through the Genetic Modification Advisory Committee (GMAC) in 2001 and also the first locally produced GM food for trial and sale in Singapore.
