Joseph Chan Mong Hong, 66, was the first Singaporean in 1988 to undergo percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, under Dr Leslie Lam, at SGH. That non-surgical procedure, a popular alternative to the bypass operation, involves passing a balloon attached to a catheter to the point where the blocked artery is, to unblock it.
