Prof Ren Ee Chee of the Genome Institute of Singapore and his research team have developed a test kit which can detect bird flu infections in poultry within hours. Current tests used by laboratories take two to three days. The ’lab-on-chip’ can identify the most lethal variety of bird flu, H5N1, plus over 20 more common influenza strains. Veredus Laboratories, a bio-tech company, is manufacturing the diagnostic kits. |
