The first liver transplant was carried out on Surinder Kaur on 29 Sep 1990 by a team of doctors from NUH. The 25-year-old production worker had been diagnosed with auto-immune liver disease and given only six months to live, before the 5-hr operation led by Dr Susan Lim , the second female doctor in the world to perform a liver transplant. The donor was construction worker, Goh Boon Chai who had fallen four storeys to his death the day before. |
