The first human open-heart operation in Singapore was performed on Chua Ah Moi on 28 Jan 1965 at SGH, by a team comprising surgeons NK Yong, SC Ong and NC Foong. It was the first cardiac bypass procedure - the closure of an arterial septic defect - ever attempted here. It was also the first occasion when a heart-lung machine was used. |
