Assoc Prof Lim Tock Han, a senior consultant at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, headed a research team to pioneer the first cataract surgery using nanotechnology, or the science of creating new materials by manipulating atoms. Using a two-in-one probe, which combines drilling via a specially nano-engineered ceramic tip, and ultrasound treatment, damage to the cornea was significantly minimised during the operation. Assoc Prof Lim and colleague Assoc Prof Ma Jan collaborated on the solution in 2001. The device will only be commercially available in 2016. |
