Assoc Prof Chia Tet Fatt of NTU created the world’s first bioluminescent orchid in 2000, which involved transforming tissues from the orchids (the Dendrobium genus), using the firefly luciferase gene. The bioluminescent orchid will glow for up to five hours in the dark.
