The first ever street party was held on 8 Aug 1988 on Orchard Road to commemorate Singapore’s 23rd National Day. It featured an hour-long variety show, which started at 11pm and ended at 2am with a midnight countdown and opening of champagne by the Deputy Prime Minister then, Goh Chok Tong.
