In 1934 the first local naval force, Straits Settlements Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (SSRNVR) was formed under British tutelage. A Malayan Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (MRNVR) was later formed. Together, the SSRNV and the MRNVR formed part of the British naval force in South-East Asia. When Singapore gained independence on 1965, the naval force was re-designated the Singapore Naval Volunteer Force (SNVF). In 1975 it was conferred the name, the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN). |
