Malayan Airway Ltd, the predecessor of Singapore Airlines, started operating in 1947 from Kallang Airport, flying from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Penang. The first plane that took off from Singapore on 1 May 1947 was a twin-engined Airspeed Consul.
