The Pledge was written in 1966 by the then Minister of Culture and former journalist, S Rajaratnam soon after the separation from Malaysia. The draft of the text was sent to the then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, who polished it before submitting it to the cabinet for approval. It was introduced to all schools in July that year.
