Thong Chai Medical Institute started out in a shophouse at Upper Pickering Street in 1867 by a group of Chinese to help fellow immigrants who could not afford medical aid. The Governor later granted the group a piece of land at Wayang Street to meet the increasing demand. The building was completed in 1892 and in 1963 gazetted as a conservation building. The institute has now moved a to 10-storey building at Chin Swee Road. |
