Benedict Tan won the sailing gold medal at the 12th Asian Games in Hiroshima. The young doctor was so well ahead of his competitors in the Laser class, that he didn’t even have to sail the final race.
He was also the first recipient of a S$250,000 cash award under the SNOC’s Multi Million Dollar Award Programme. Tan was awarded Sportsman of the Year thrice in 1991, 1993 and 1994.
