The first-ever Malaya Cup final was played in 1921. Singapore beat Selangor 2-1 to win the first Cup. Both teams fielded a good number of Europeans. The football tournament was initiated by servicemen of the battleship, HMS Malaya, in 1920 and became an inter-state tournament the next year. It was later renamed as the Malaysia Cup.
