Name First Rickshaws
Category Infrastructure - Transport
Data Info The first rickshaws were muscle-powered small, lightweight, two-wheel carts imported from Shanghai in 1880. As the number of rickshaws grew rapidly, the government in 1899 built a depot at the junction of Middle Road and Prinsep Street to inspect and impound the vehicles. In 1903, the bigger Jinrikisha Station was built at the junction of Tanjong Pagar Road and Neil Road. Rickshaws are phased out after the Second World War.
