Munshi Abdullah Abdul Kadir (1796-1854) taught Raffles Malay in Malacca before they came to Singapore. After 1819, he continued to be Raffles' secretary, interpreter and translator of official documents. He is also multi-lingual in Arabic, Tamil and Hindi. He co-published Vocabulary of the English and Malay Languages (1820) with preacher Claudius Henry Thomsen. |
