Using a new optical fibre backbone to link up all the existing campus networks, NUS set up the first true campus-wide network, known as NUSNET which was linked to the internet. When NUSNET went into operation in August 1990, the 64k bps internet link between NUS and Princeton was fully functional, making NUS the home of the first internet site in Singapore and the region.
