Data Info |
The riots occurred in May 1854, probably ignited by an argument over the weight of a kati of rice which one man was selling another. One was a Teochew and the other a Hokkien. A crowd gathered and each man symphatised with his dialect compatriot. A fight started and soon men were coming out with sticks, stones and knives. After about 12 days, the riots took a toll of about 400 lives and 300 houses were destroyed. |
