In 1951, two women became members of the Legislative Council, similar to what is the Parliament now. Mrs Elizabeth Choy was nominated to the Council by the Governor after she contested unsuccessfully at the Municipal Elections as an independent candidate. The other was Mrs Vilasini Menon who also stood as an independent and successfully contested for a seat in the Council. |
