Shamsul Maidin officiated in three preliminary matches in the June 2006 World Cup.
At the World Cup, Shamsul was the first referee to be awarded a second and third match by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). He is the first Singaporean to officiate three World Cup matches.
