The New World at Jalan Besar was opened in 1923 by Ong Boon Tat and Ong Peng Hock, two prominent Baba merchants. It entertained with boxing, wrestling, variety shows, opera and a small cabaret with Filipino artistes. Later the Shaw brothers bought a half-share in New World's parent company, Ong Sam Leong Ltd.
