In the late 1840s, Khoo Cheng Tiong was importing rice from his rice mills in Saigon. The company, Heng Chun was at 17 Boat Quay. Khoo was also the president of the Chinese Charitable Hospital and recognised as the head of the Hokkien community. His son Khoo Teck Seang continued to proper the business.
