The early colonial rulers were quite powerless against piracy until the coming of steamships. Five pirate boats actually sailed rowed towards the paddle steamer Diana in the 1840s. When they realise that Diana was sailing towards them against the wind, they were horrified and started to flee. Soon enough the pirates were caught and killed.
