Data Info When Singapore became independent in 1965, the entire Navy comprised three vessels. These three vessels were re-commissioned in 1967 to bear the RSS (Republic of Singapore Ship) prefix - the RSS SINGAPURA, the RSS PANGLIMA and the RSS BEDOK. RSS SINGAPURA was a former Japanese mine-layer, the 'Wakataka', which the British had converted for use and renamed the 'Laburnum'. This was presented to the Singapore Naval Volunteer Force (SNVF) and berthed at Telok Ayer Basin. The other two vessels, the RSS PANGLIMA and RSS BEDOK, were used as armed patrol craft to protect Singapore coastal waters against pirates and smugglers.
