On 7 Sept 1995, the world's first peripheral blood stem cell transplant from a matched unrelated donor to a Thalassaemia Major patient is carried out at the Singapore General Hospital on 4 year-old Joshua Soong Chuan Shen. In his case, the stem cells were extracted through the blood instead of the conventional method of extraction from the bone marrow. |
