Fandi Ahmad was the youngest player to play for the national team when he joined it in 1978. He played a lead role in Singapore’s Malaysia Cup victory over Selangor in 1980. He turned professional in 1981 and for 20 years played for various clubs including Dutch giants, Ajax Amsterdam and FC Groningen. He won the Golden Boot Award for the 1988 Malaysia Cup season.
Fandi Ahmad played with the national team in the 1983, 1985 and 1989 SEA Games, winning the silver at each of these Games. He was captain of the national team from 1993 to 1997 and as captain of Geyland United, helped them to win the inaugural S-League title in 1996. He was also awarded the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Coach of the Month in 2000. He was awarded the Public Service Medal in 1994. He chalked up more than 100 caps as a national player and was inducted into the AFC Century Club in 2001. He became the youngest and first former international to be appointed as a Council Member of the Football Association of Singapore in 2001. |
