Tan Ser Cher was one of only three Singaporean athletes who had achieved a Commonwealth Games individual gold medal. At Cardiff in 1958, he lifted a total weight of 685lbs to clinch the gold in the featherweight division. Tan had begun training at 16 years of age. At 21, he was already the Champion of Champions in the local weightlifting competition in 1954. By 1956, he was selected to represent Singapore at the Melbourne Olympics. In this, his first international competition, he was placed 7th. He continued to compete in both local and international competitions including the 3rd Asian Games in Tokyo in 1958 where he attained 4th position. Two months later, he reached the pinnacle of his weightlifting career with a gold medal at the Cardiff Games. |
