Ng Liang Chiang (1921-1992) won a gold medal for 110m hurdles at the 1st Asian Games in New Delhi, India in 1951 and became the first and only athlete in Singapore to do so in the Asian Games series.
Prior to that momentous occasion, he had won gold medals for the 100m and 400m hurdles at the 7th Annual Chinese National Athletic Meet in Shanghai breaking the All-China records.
Liang Chiang decided to retire from competitive hurdling when he was 32 but continued coaching. His trainee, Heather Merican, received two gold medals at the 7th SEAP Games (1973) held in Singapore. |
